Sound Blaster X-Fi Fatal1ty FPS Review
Sound Blaster X-Fi Fatal1ty FPS
Pros
Enormous feature set. Stunning audio quality. Outstanding interface. Can restore badly recorded or compressed content. Optional MCE-like interface with remote. Flexible I/O box fits into a 5.25-inch drive bay, plus 64MB onboard RAM.
Cons
Expensive.
Bottom Line
The Fatal1ty adds 64MB of onboard RAM and an I/O breakout box to the basic X-Fi platform. Although these features make a superb board even better, you'd need to be a serious gamer to find them worth the extra money.
The X-Fi Fatal1ty FPS ($280 street) targets hardcore gamers. In addition to an I/O drive, it comes with 64MB of X-RAM designed to improve the sound quality and performance of compatible games. This is a feature worth having if you're into high-end gaming, but we're not sure that it's worth a $150 premium over the price of an XtremeMusic board. Creative might better serve the gaming community with a more affordable X-RAM model that lacks an I/O drive or offer one that lets users add their own lower-priced off-the-shelf SDRAM.
